East Midlands Derby Day For Nottingham & Leicester

Posture and Office Seating have a VIP day in the 1865 suite at the City Ground for the Nottingham Forest V Leicester City game on August 20th. We are looking forward to the day out and the game in particular as we are an East Midlands based company.

Our family has an affinity with Leicester as my boys were born in Leicester General, as we lived in Thurmaston for a few years in the 80’s. Although we are Forest fans first and foremost, I hope it is a good game and we have a great day out.

Joining me are two friends, one a Leeds fan and the other a Macclesfield Town fan. We go to eachothers teams games whenever we can for a day out and some good light hearted banter.

Click Posture and Office Seating to see the article and some great discounts on the Nottingham Forest website commercial section – with a brief overview of the company.

Tragic Gamer dies of DVT

The dangers of sitting for long periods have once again been highlighted recently. Chris Staniforth, 20, played upto 12 hours at his desk playing his gaming console, died from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in May.

DVT is more infamously associated with long haul travel, but can occur with long periods of inactivity whilst sat at a computer desk.

The South Yorkshire man suffered a blood clot to his left calf, where it moved from to his lungs causing a fatal pulmonary embolism.

We cannot stress how important it is to take regular breaks from your computer desk, whether you are gaming or working.

Let’s hope that tragic Chris’s death serves to shock a few of the more flippant among us and hopefully save some lives.

Lord Sugar Dismisses DSE Assessments

I was absolutely amazed to hear Lord Sugar say he doesn’t think back care is an issue in the work place! It just goes to show that even a revered entrepreneur with hundreds of employees, can be well wide of the mark.

Lord Sugar said in The Apprentice 2011 final where inventor Tom Pellereau won with a business plan based on an ergonomic office chair invention: “I have to be careful people don’t trip over wires, that the lifts are working… but office chair assessments?”

Tom Pellereau’s business plan included assessing companies employees seating arrangements and offering a product that will prevent back pain. In the office chair industry it is standard practice to DSE assess computer desk operatives and there is big money to be made offering just a DSE service to the major corporations. There are companies that just offer specialist DSE assessment services.

Most office furniture companies offer a DSE service for free or build it into their quotations. In fact it is recommended that an industry professional performs the DSE assessment because mistakes are made. Posture & Office Seating have had at least one occasion where an occ’ health specialist has recommended an ergonomic chair incorrectly for a user with musculo-skeletal problems. The client then complained that they couldn’t get their employee comfortable. On this occasion we performed a free DSE assessment and supplied another chair more suitable to the users back condition.

We have a specialist in musculo-skeletal diseases and back problems that chiropractors and doctors alike have consulted for various patients, He has advised hospitals and medical practices all over the UK on ergonomic office chairs for over 19 years. Posture and office seating have sourced products based on this specialist industry knowledge.

This type of specialist knowledge has been utilised to produce quality ergonomic chairs for the mass market like the obusforme extra 5440-1.

I am sure Lord Sugar will change his tune when he is contacting retailers to sell Tom’s office chair innovation. DSE assessments or Display Screen Equipment assessments to you and me, play a crucial role in preventing or aiding work station related physiological problems. Lord Sugar may have brushed off Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as piffle, but I would like to bet his own in-house occupational health expert will be putting him straight this morning on a few ergonomic truths, but then again?

Britains businesses are fighting back

Well, the rain is well and truly pouring on News Corporations parade as well as all over the UK summer. Care homes operator Southern Cross is on the verge of collapse as their landlord’s desert them in their time of need and councils are cutting back on services across the UK.

The message from the Government is that they want entrepreneurs to drag the country back to its feet. I am not sure how that is going to happen with VAT at 20% and low consumer confidence.

What I do know is, small and large companies alike, are resilient in difficult times. Directors that started the company had drive and determination and bounce back-ability, and those qualities will undoubtedly make their companies thrive in the future. Enduring these setbacks make the victories all the more sweet. Selling just one Mercury MH1 24/7 chair to a small business, means just that, that somebody out there is fighting back and not only needs a new office chair for a new employee but is making a statement of intent.

Even Sir Richard Branson failed once or twice before he became successful. Battling with the banks to fund grand projects became his obsession and he wouldn’t be defeated. Where one venture failed he either tried a different business altogether or a new approach. But the common theme throughout his life has been the determination to succeed. He may have been rebuffed, battered and bruised, but he came charging back from a different angle snarling and kicking. Of course there is more to his success than just determination, Sir Richard has the gift of reading the market and providing a product to meet the need, he has diversified to protect his Virgin empire, and used his own proven business techniques. There has to be a demand, a need for a product or a service for companies to be able to survive.

If the Government want entrepreneurs to get the UK back on its feet, they need to stimulate the market in any way they can to give companies a better chance to succeed, but there is business out there, we just have to be more creative in how we find it.

The sun will come out soon soon enough.

Southern Cross Care Homes Four Month Reprieve

Health Minister Paul Burstow has said a deal between the Care Home giant Southern Cross and its landlords has given a four month reprieve for the 30,000 or so residents and is welcomed. It may be operating under a new name and only run 250 – 400 of its current portfolio after a restructuring committee was formed from the landlords and employees of Southern Cross. It is a sorry state of affairs that privately run care homes can seemingly be closed at the drop of a hat, putting the futures of our elderly in jeopardy. The problem is of course, Southern Cross operate their many care homes on a commercial basis, and without strict regulations in place to protect the residents in the event of a company collapse this will happen again. Where do the landlords stand on this? Surely there should be some legislation or insurance put in place that any tenant company going out of business, will pass responsibility for the residents’ continued care to the landlord. Do the landlords not have a duty of care? At least they have a conscience.

MP Slates BBC for Office Chair Safety

Unbelievable that the BBC employ an ergonomic office chair professional to ensure the health and safety of its employees whilst John Whittingdale, the Conservative chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, pours scorn on the corporation for doing so.

Although he claims the BBC are at risk of becoming a laughing stock, may I suggest the Honourable member for Maldon sits more upright in his constituency seat – we wouldn’t want him making a ‘where there’s blame there’s a claim’ appeal now, would we?

Uncertain times for the UK’s largest care home operator

Southern Cross are to hand back 132 care homes to landlords.

The Financial Times states documents issued by the stricken company say “double digit” number of care homes could be closed.

The care homes are to be handed back in stages with 47 being returned to landlords in next 4-6 months, and the other 85 are to be handed over in the next 2-5 years.

It is not clear whether the homes will be kept open, so the 31,000 elderly residents in 750 care homes may have to be relocated.

Southern Cross stand to shed 7% of its total workforce, a staggering 3,000 jobs after losses of £311m in the 6 months to March 31st.

UK Office Chair World Record Attempt

A UK student, Michael Boardman, 19, will attempt a Guinness World Record on 17th June 2011 for the longest distance travelled on an office chair. After reading an office furniture industry study showed an average 12km (7.5miles) was routinely covered by an office chair in one year and student Michael thought he could easily beat that!

- I’ll let you know how he gets on.
